Preamble
We, the journalists of {{company_name}}, commit to upholding the highest ethical standards in our profession. This Code of Ethics serves as a guide for our conduct, ensuring our commitment to truth, accuracy, independence, and accountability in serving the public interest within the Southern African context.
Accuracy and Fairness
Journalists shall strive for accuracy in all reporting, verifying information from multiple credible sources. We will present all sides of a story fairly and impartially, avoiding distortion, exaggeration, or omission of material facts. Corrections of significant errors will be made promptly and prominently.
Independence and Impartiality
Journalists shall maintain independence from vested interests, political affiliations, and advertising pressures. We will resist any influence that compromises our journalistic integrity or the public's right to unbiased information. Conflicts of interest, whether real or perceived, must be disclosed and managed transparently.
Minimising Harm
Journalists shall be mindful of the potential impact of their reporting on individuals and communities. We will show compassion for victims of tragedy or crime and exercise particular care when dealing with children and vulnerable persons. Privacy rights will be respected, and intrusion into private lives will be justified only by an overriding public interest.
Accountability and Transparency
Journalists are accountable for their work to the public and their peers. We will be transparent about our methods and sources, except where confidentiality is necessary to protect individuals or enable the gathering of information in the public interest. We will respond promptly and openly to legitimate complaints and criticisms regarding our reporting.
Integrity in Gathering Information
Journalists shall obtain information, photographs, and illustrations by honest and fair means. The use of subterfuge or misrepresentation is permissible only when all other means of obtaining essential public interest information have been exhausted and the public interest strongly outweighs the harm of the method.
Plagiarism
Journalists must not plagiarise. All content must be original or appropriately attributed to its source. The ideas, words, and creative works of others must be acknowledged clearly and unmistakably.
Digital Ethics
In the digital realm, journalists will uphold the same ethical standards as in traditional media. This includes verifying user-generated content, being transparent about sponsored content, and respecting copyright in online publications.
