Principles of Ethical Conduct
1. **Respect for Dignity and Autonomy:** Physical therapists shall respect the inherent dignity, autonomy, and rights of individuals, including their right to make informed decisions about their care.
2. **Beneficence:** Physical therapists shall act in the best interest of their patients, striving to maximize benefit and minimize harm.
3. **Non-maleficence:** Physical therapists shall avoid imposing or inflicting harm upon patients.
4. **Justice:** Physical therapists shall advocate for fairness and equitable access to physical therapy services, and shall treat all individuals without discrimination.
5. **Veracity:** Physical therapists shall be truthful and honest in all professional interactions, including communication with patients, colleagues, and other healthcare providers.
6. **Confidentiality:** Physical therapists shall protect the confidentiality of patient information and disclose it only with informed consent or as required by law.
7. **Professional Competence:** Physical therapists shall provide services only within their scope of practice and areas of competence, and shall continuously engage in professional development to maintain and enhance their skills.
Professional Boundaries and Relationships
1. **Patient-Therapist Relationship:** Physical therapists shall establish and maintain appropriate professional boundaries with patients, avoiding any exploitation or abuse of the therapeutic relationship.
2. **Inter-professional Relationships:** Physical therapists shall collaborate respectfully and professionally with other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive and coordinated patient care.
3. **Supervisory Relationships:** Physical therapists who supervise others shall ensure that those under their supervision practice competently and ethically.
Reporting Ethical Violations
1. Any physical therapist who becomes aware of an ethical violation by a colleague or other professional is encouraged to address the matter directly with the individual, if appropriate.
2. If direct resolution is not possible or adequate, or if the violation poses a significant risk to patient safety or welfare, the physical therapist shall report the violation to the designated ethics committee or relevant regulatory body within {{company_name}} or the appropriate Southern African jurisdiction.
