1. Purpose

The purpose of this Daycare Illness Policy is to prevent the spread of infectious diseases within our facility and to promote a healthy environment for all children, staff, and families. This policy outlines the criteria for exclusion of sick children, guidelines for their return to the daycare, and procedures for managing illness while a child is in our care.

2. Symptoms Requiring Exclusion from Daycare

Children exhibiting any of the following symptoms must be kept at home and will not be admitted to daycare:

- Fever of {{fever_temperature}}°C ({{fever_temperature_fahrenheit}}°F) or higher.

- Diarrhea (defined as {{diarrhea_frequency}} or more loose stools in {{diarrhea_time_period}}).

- Vomiting ({{vomiting_frequency}} or more times).

- Rashes (unidentified or contagious, e.g., chickenpox, measles).

- Eye discharge (redness, swelling, pus indicative of conjunctivitis).

- Persistent coughing or difficulty breathing.

- Severe sore throat or complaints of pain upon swallowing.

- Yellowish skin or eyes (jaundice).

3. Conditions for Return to Daycare

A child may return to daycare only when they meet the following criteria:

- They have been fever-free for at least {{fever_free_period_hours}} hours without the use of fever-reducing medication.

- They have not vomited or had diarrhea for at least {{vomiting_diarrhea_free_period_hours}} hours.

- They are free of any contagious rashes or have a doctor's note stating they are no longer contagious.

- They are able to participate in regular daycare activities.

- A doctor's note may be required for certain illnesses or prolonged absences, as determined by daycare staff.

4. Procedures for Illness During Daycare Hours

If a child becomes ill while at daycare, the following steps will be taken:

- The child will be immediately isolated from other children in a supervised, comfortable area.

- Parents/guardians will be notified immediately to pick up their child.

- If parents/guardians cannot be reached, emergency contacts will be called.

- Staff will monitor the child's symptoms and provide comfort until they are picked up.

- The child's area and any contaminated toys or surfaces will be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected after the child's departure.

5. Medication Administration

Daycare staff will only administer medication under the following strict conditions:

- A completed 'Medication Authorization Form' ({{medication_form_id}}) must be on file.

- All medication must be in its original container, clearly labeled with the child's name, dosage instructions, and expiration date.

- Prescription medication must have a pharmacy label.

- Over-the-counter medication requires a doctor's note specifying dosage and duration.

- Parents/guardians must provide all necessary medication.

6. Emergency Procedures

In the event of a medical emergency, daycare staff will:

- Administer first aid as needed.

- Contact emergency services (e.g., {{emergency_number}}) immediately.

- Notify parents/guardians.

- Follow the child's emergency medical plan if one is on file.

7. Parent/Guardian Responsibilities

Parents/guardians are responsible for:

- Notifying the daycare promptly if their child will be absent due to illness.

- Picking up their sick child immediately when notified by daycare staff.

- Providing accurate and up-to-date emergency contact information.
