Job Summary
The IT Systems Administrator is responsible for the effective provisioning, installation, configuration, operation, and maintenance of all hardware, software, and related infrastructure. This individual participates in technical research and development to enable continuing innovation within the infrastructure. They ensure that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures adhere to organizational values, enabling staff, and partners. The role requires a strong understanding of IT best practices specific to the Southern African business environment, with a focus on reliability, security, and efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
System Administration: Install, configure, operate, and maintain server hardware and software, network devices, and related infrastructure. Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems, and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.
Network Management: Monitor and maintain local area networks (LANs) and wide area networks (WANs), ensuring optimal performance and security. Troubleshoot network issues and implement solutions.
Security Management: Implement and enforce security protocols, including firewalls, antivirus systems, and access controls. Conduct regular security audits and vulnerability assessments. Stay updated on cybersecurity threats relevant to the Southern African context.
User Support: Provide technical support to end-users for hardware, software, and network-related issues. Resolve helpdesk tickets efficiently and professionally.
Backup and Disaster Recovery: Develop and implement robust backup and disaster recovery plans. Regularly test backup procedures to ensure data integrity and availability.
Documentation: Maintain comprehensive documentation of IT systems, configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting guides.
Vendor Management: Liaise with external vendors and service providers for hardware, software, and IT services.
Qualifications and Experience
Education: Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field. Relevant industry certifications (e.g., CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA), CCNA) are highly desirable.
Experience: {{number_of_years}} years of proven experience as an IT Systems Administrator or similar role, preferably within a Southern African business environment. Demonstrated experience with Windows Server environments, Active Directory, virtualization (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V), and networking protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP).
Skills: Strong knowledge of operating systems (Windows, Linux), network hardware (routers, switches, firewalls), and security principles. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Fluency in English and at least one official language of the country of operation is highly advantageous.
Working Conditions
This position may require occasional after-hours support and weekend work in response to system emergencies or maintenance. The role requires the ability to lift and move computer equipment as needed.
