Job Summary:
The Paralegal and Legal Assistant will provide administrative and legal support to the legal department, ensuring efficient operation and adherence to legal standards. This role involves assisting with legal research, document preparation, court filings, and general office administration to support legal professionals in various legal matters relevant to a Southern African business environment.
Key Responsibilities:
**Legal Research:** Conduct thorough legal research using online databases, libraries, and other sources to support legal cases and advisories. Summarize findings and prepare research memoranda.
**Document Preparation:** Draft, review, and proofread legal documents, including contracts, pleadings, briefs, resolutions, and correspondence, ensuring accuracy and compliance with legal requirements.
**Case Management:** Assist with the organisation and maintenance of case files, including indexing, scanning, and filing of documents. Monitor case deadlines and schedules.
**Court Filings:** Prepare and submit legal documents to courts, tribunals, and other regulatory bodies, adhering to specific procedural rules and deadlines.
**Client Interaction:** Liaise with clients, external counsel, and other stakeholders as directed, maintaining professionalism and confidentiality.
**Administrative Support:** Provide general administrative assistance, including scheduling meetings, managing calendars, processing invoices, and handling incoming and outgoing communications.
**Compliance:** Assist in ensuring compliance with local laws, regulations, and company policies relevant to Southern African jurisdictions.
Qualifications:
**Education:** A diploma or degree in Paralegal Studies, Legal Secretarial, Law, or a related field. A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) would be advantageous.
**Experience:** Minimum of {{number_of_years}} years of experience working as a Paralegal or Legal Assistant, preferably within a corporate or law firm environment in Southern Africa.
**Legal Knowledge:** Solid understanding of legal principles, court procedures, and legal terminology, particularly within a Southern African context.
**Technical Skills:** Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and legal research platforms (e.g., LexisNexis, Juta, Westlaw).
**Soft Skills:** Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong organizational and time management abilities, keen attention to detail, and ability to work independently and as part of a team. High level of integrity and discretion in handling confidential information.
