Job Summary
The Purchasing Agent & Buyer for Farm Products is responsible for sourcing, negotiating, and purchasing a wide range of agricultural products, including fresh produce, grains, livestock, and other farm inputs. This role ensures timely and cost-effective acquisition of high-quality products that meet the company's specifications and market demands. The incumbent will establish and maintain strong relationships with farmers, suppliers, and distributors across the Southern African region.
Key Responsibilities
1. **Supplier Management:** Identify, evaluate, and qualify new and existing suppliers of farm products. Conduct due diligence on supplier capabilities, compliance, and ethical practices. Maintain a comprehensive database of approved suppliers.
2. **Sourcing and Procurement:** Develop and implement sourcing strategies for various farm products. Issue requests for proposals (RFPs) and requests for quotation (RFQs). Analyze bids, negotiate prices, terms, and delivery schedules to achieve optimal value and quality.
3. **Contract Management:** Prepare and administer purchase orders and supply contracts. Ensure all contractual obligations are met by suppliers. Monitor supplier performance against agreed-upon key performance indicators (KPIs).
4. **Market Analysis:** Stay abreast of market trends, price fluctuations, and supply chain dynamics within the agricultural sector in Southern Africa. Provide insights and recommendations to management regarding sourcing strategies.
5. **Quality Assurance:** Collaborate with quality control teams to ensure all purchased farm products meet established quality standards and regulatory requirements. Address and resolve any quality issues with suppliers.
6. **Inventory Management:** Work closely with inventory and logistics teams to ensure optimal stock levels, minimize waste, and maintain efficient supply chains.
7. **Compliance:** Ensure all purchasing activities comply with company policies, local and international trade regulations, and ethical sourcing guidelines.
Qualifications
**Education:** Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Agriculture, Business Administration, or a related field. A Master's degree is a plus.
**Experience:** Minimum of {{years_of_experience}} years of experience in purchasing, procurement, or supply chain management, specifically with farm products or in the agricultural sector. Experience in Southern African markets is highly desirable.
**Skills:** Strong negotiation and analytical skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities. Proficiency in procurement software and Microsoft Office Suite. Knowledge of agricultural practices, product seasonality, and quality standards.
**Other:** Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel frequently within the region for supplier visits and market research.
Working Conditions
This position typically operates in an office environment but requires frequent travel to farms, supplier sites, and markets. The role may involve working outdoors in varying weather conditions when visiting agricultural sites. Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to {{weight_limit}} kg.
